Tata Steel Foundation Empowers Visually Impaired Individuals Through Assistive Technology Training


Sukinda, September 8, 2023: Tata Steel Foundation (TSF) proudly announces the successful completion of a specialized training program for individuals with visual impairments at its SABAL Centre in Sukinda Chromite Mine. A total of 39 participants from across Odisha received comprehensive training on assistive devices and technology during this transformative program.


The five-day training program, uniquely designed for individuals with visual impairments, was conducted in two batches. Expert trainers from the Assistech Lab of IIT Delhi and the NGO Saksham led the workshops, providing invaluable training on various assistive devices. Participants were introduced to technologies such as screen readers, braille displays, tactile books, indoor navigation devices, mobility aids like canes, and e-library access.


Pankaj Satija, Executive-In-Charge of Ferro Alloys and Manganese Division (FAMD) at Tata Steel, stated, "We are committed to empowering every individual to reach their true potential, and this specialized training workshop is a testament to that commitment. Our dedication to creating a more inclusive society is exemplified by providing skill-building opportunities to marginalized communities."


The training program brought together a diverse group of participants eager to enhance their independence and employability. Through hands-on workshops, expert guidance, and cutting-edge assistive technology, participants acquired valuable skills to overcome challenges associated with visual impairment. Emphasis was placed on digital literacy, ensuring that participants could effectively navigate and utilize technology in their daily lives.


Participants expressed their gratitude for the program, highlighting the newfound confidence they gained. The skills acquired during the training will undoubtedly open up new opportunities for them, both personally and professionally.

Debanjan Mukherjee, Unit Head (Tata Steel Foundation), Goutam Chakrobarty, AGM (Administration), and Dikshya Makhija, Manager (TSF), played pivotal roles in guiding and coordinating the smooth execution of the workshop.
